Homesteading “from scratch” in North Carolina, Melissa Jones and her family inspire us that we can accomplish amazing things with a simple determination to make do. On their little patch of land and with a limited budget, they’re gardening, canning, sewing, and raising small livestock.

Oh, and did I mention they also produce a beautiful, free, online magazine just for homesteaders? It’s called From Scratch Magazine and if you haven’t subscribed already, you should!

On today’s podcast, Melissa and I talk about her family’s homestead, their philosophy of doing a lot with little, and their labor of love — the magazine.

Get to know Melissa and her family, plus more about their online magazine, through the links and information below, and of course through this podcast. Plus… the tip of the week!

Tip of the Week: First Thing in the Morning — Take a Big Drink!

We wake up dehydrated, so first thing in the morning, replenish your body with one of its most basic needs — water. Inside the podcast, I tell you how I spice up my morning water with lemon and minerals.

Listener Question

JoAnne asks:

“I have a general health knowledge question that I have been wanting to ask someone who might know. Here goes… I know hydrogenated oils are very bad. We stay clear of them all. But what if a vegetable oil is in an ingredient list as “sunflower oil” etc, with no hydrogenated prefix? Can one assume that if a veggie oil is in a processed item, like tortilla chips for example, that it is hydrogenated so it will last longer? Or is it hydrogenated only if stated? I know veggie oils are not great and we do not eat many, if any, processed/boxed/bagged foods, but are they to be avoided only if hydrogenated, or should they be avoided in any product? Thank you so much! Blessings, Jo-Anne”
